Iteration Documentation
MK6:
Event Horizon MK6 is set to compete at the inaugural MIT event on December 14th.
Notable Changes:
- Changed drive system from cleated wheels to cleated shufflers for a 50% weight bonus
- Upgraded bladed to S7 tool steel to help with impact resistance
- Increased weapon mass from 450g to 650g
- Increased weapon tooth length by ~17mm
- Brought back and increased the durability of the weapon shield
- Altered the hub gear mount for improved durability
- Switched from needle bearings to dowel skids to reduce heat in the weapon mount and improve durability
- Increased the number of rim bearings from 12 to 16
- Added a forced air cooling system to reduce heat build up in the chassis
- Added ventilation holes for the weapon motors
- Added carbon fiber inserts to increase bot rigidity, help dissipate weapon motor heat, and better defend against verts
MK5:
Event Horizon MK5 competed at the April 20th event and achieved limited success. In terms of the actual competition, the bot did very poorly, loosing its first match due to the drive motors dying a few seconds in, and loosing its second match from having no drive at all. Despite failing at the event, MK5 was still a huge success in terms of the blade. This iteration made the major change from O-rings to gears and it worked beautifully. Pretty much everything was better regarding the blade for this event, it was faster, stronger, easier to repair, and more durable. The only downside in the weapon system seemed to be heat build up due to the faster speeds, but this can be improved in future iterations. For us, the most notable moment from this event was when Event Horizon was popped up into the wall and the blade hit it with enough force to pierce the first layer, damage the second, and stay embedded with the bot totally off the ground.
Notable Changes:
- Changed from driving the blade with O-rings to driving it with metal gears
- Upgraded to a 4s LiPo for greater weapon speeds
- Upgraded to slimmer and 4s capable weapon motors
- Changed to more space efficient brushed drive motors
- Downgraded steel in blade to 4140 for better machinability
- Removed shield as there was not enough weight to make it durable
- Whole robot slimmed by 6mm
MK4:
Event Horizon MK4 competed at the September 30th event and did very well. The bot plowed through its first two matches with one-hit KOs before going up against The Loophole-style robot, Booty Brigade. The fight ended with the battery unplugging in Event Horizon, but other than that, there was no structural damage to the robot. After being knocked out of the competition, Event Horizon went up against Chainsaw Kitty in a grudge match. The fight led to Event Horizon ripping all the way through the first polycarbonate cage wall twice and damaging the second once—a first-ever in the 3lb weight class at NHRL. The match ended with the power wire to the receiver getting unplugged, but again, there was no structural damage to the robot.
Notable Changes:
- Removed two unnecessary T-nuts from the center of the bot
- Upgraded to an AR600 blade
- Reduced the number of blade teeth from two to one for better bite
- Increased the length of the tooth from 25mm to 45mm
- Added a shield to one side of the blade to defend against horizontal weapons
- Upgraded to roller bearings for horizontal constraint
- Switched to dowels instead of screws to hold the vertical constraint bearings for repair speed
MK3:
Event Horizon MK3 competed at the August 12th, 2023 event and did incredibly well. The bot lost its first match due to an internal technical issue, but won the next three before being struck down by Spartan. Spartan's blade managed to pass below the blade of Event Horizon and damage a weapon motor causing the entire weapon to stop spinning. Event Horizon was otherwise unscathed but the loss of its weapon led to Spartan taking the judge's decision.
Notable Changes:
- Changed cleat geometry so the spikes point outward radially
- Changed cleat material to higher carbon spring steel so they hold an edge
- Made cleats thinner to improve bite into the floor
- Changed chassis material to TPU for better print reliability and ductility
- Added T-nuts to the center of the chassis
MK2:
Event Horizon MK2 competed at the May 6th, 2023 event and did much better than before. Event Horizon succeeded in winning its first qualifying match and first bracket match but was unfortunately pitted against Eruption in its second bracket match, where it lost by a split judge's decision.
Notable Changes:
- Added an additional weapon motor to improve torque and reduce the time required to spin up
- Changed from gluing O-rings directly to the motor can to using a 3D printed polycarbonate hub to hold the O-rings in place
- Switched to low carbon steel cleats for better grip, reduced weight, smaller formfactor, and customizable diameter
- Chassis is moisture treated this time as it drastically improves the durability of CoPA 3D prints
- Chassis halves are now interchangeable to reduce the number of spares required
- Total thickness of the chassis was reduced by 10.85mm
- Chassis is held together with T-nuts and threaded rods rather then recessed nuts and blots
MK1:
Event Horizon MK1 competed at the March 18th, 2023 event with mixed success. While the general design showed promise, Event Horizon lost both qualifying matches and was eliminated.
Features:
- Invertible design
- 3D printed CoPA chassis
- MegaSpark brushless gear motors for drive
- 2" 40A BaneBots wheels
- Weapon is driven by 3 2600Kv motors
- 1/4in thick 250mm diameter AR500 blade with 25mm bite
