Similar to Avalanche MK1, Avalanche MK2's debut was filled with problems. The beater was incorrectly heat treated and very brittle, the tpu armor was weakly attached, and the tpu drive gears were prone to strip. Avalanche's first opponent in August 2023 was Herbie 3, a very similar robot, with a wide beater and 4wd construction. In the first 10 seconds, Avalanche landed two hits on corners of herbie's frame, then spun fully up and went for a weapon on weapon hit. The hit broke both Avalanche and Herbie's beaters, and bent both shafts. Avalanche was able to pust Herbie around for the rest of the fight, and win by judges decision. The beater had to be welded together after the fight and took longer than expected, forcing Avalanche to Forfeit its next fight against Superscope. Avalanche's final fight was against First Contact, a horizontal spinner with an unhardened bar. The fight started with First Contact spinning up and ripping off the side armor on Avalanche. The fight ended when First Contact and Avalanche hit weapon on weapon, and the impact sheared off the teeth on Avalanche's drive gears, rendering it immobile, and ending the competition for Avalanche. |

Avalanche is 12lb drum spinner with a 6061 aluminum billet frame, protected by AR500 and TPU armor. It has multiple armor configurations to attack and defend best against different types of robots. It was designed, built, and driven by high school student Micah Farris.
The first time it competed was January 2023. Before the competition, a drive speed controller broke, causing the robot to lose drive after large hits. Avalanche's first round opponent, Ishtar forfeited, sending Avalanche straight to the first round. It lost its first fight against Controlled Demolition via a judges decision because aforementioned speed controller issue. Avalanche was then entered into the large rumble at the end of the day where it proved itself to be reliable, taking big hits from the 45lb shell spinner Big Cookie.
The next time it competed was in March 2023 with several upgrades. These include switching to 6s and buying a smaller weapon speed controller. Its first fight was against Blue Cheese, which has a history of weapon problems. The fight was very fast with Avalanche dealing out some powerful hits, causing Blue Cheese's bec to shut off, killing the robot. The second fight was against Saiko! which was favored to win the entire event (which it did). Avalanche started by winning the first two weapon on weapon hits, leading Saiko!'s driver and captain Jamison Go to increase the weapon speed to aid in winning weapon on weapon hits. This caused Saiko! to dominate the fight, leading to its win by tapout. The next fight was against Hooligan in the round of 16 (Avalanche had a bye in the first round). Once again, this was a quick fight. Avalanche flipped Hooligan over and proceeded to hit them directly in their weapon, which caused Hooligans weapon belt to snap and Avalanche's weapon belt to be dislodged. Hooligan became high centered because Avalanche warped the frame, and was counted out. Avalanche's final fight was a rematch against Saiko! and the winner would qualify for the finals. This fight was similar to the first one, with a dominant performance by Saiko! and a win by KO. Avalanche was completely destroyed in this fight, giving an excuse for Avalanche MK2 which is a complete overhaul of the first version, estimated to be competing in August 2023.
This new version centers around a more optimized beater bar weapon with a higher tipspeed and moment of inertia as well as a more reliable single stage geared drive system.
The next version of Avalanche features a return to a drum weapon and hybrid vytaflex/cleat wheels, and is scheduled to compete in March 2024.
