Komodo is a 3lb horizontal undercutter. Design started in January 2022 and it debuted at NHRL at the new bots event in May 2022 finishing 3rd and qualifying for the NHRL World Championship event to be held December 2022. Komodo took inspiration from Minimizer/Thagomizer with the more narrow wheelbase, longer weapon support arm, and having a defensive side of the robot which helps move the CoG closer to the wheelbase.
May 2022 NHRL Event
At this event, Komodo was a midcutter with a full unibody TPU chassis. The drive is a custom two stage reduction using all nylon printed gears. The wheels are printed TPU with a cast PU tread. The wheels are driven by a printed 1 inch live shaft, which is supported by a titanium plate.
The drive proved to be very reliable, quick, and fairly powerful, however the weapon was on the edge of being killed the entire event. The weapon was very weak to being hit out of plane, and hitting hard objects like the forks from Crashfest was killing the weapon motor. Two weapon motors were killed, one in each fight with Crashfest. The thwacking motion like you see in Minimizer/Thagomizer was there, but it was difficult to get right due to the proportionally shorter distance between the CoG and weapon compared to Minimizer.
November 2022 NHRL Event
Komodo had a massive redesign/upgrade between the May and November events, mostly focused on the weapon. The drive has been the best part of Komodo to this point, so that has remained almost untouched since May. The below list captures the major points of the upgrade.
- Weapon moved ~1 inch closer to the body
- Weapon diameter reduced from 7.5 inches to 6.65 inches.
- Weapon height dropped approximately 0.5 inches and rearranged to an undercutter configuration.
- Moved from a timing belt to a v-belt
- Number of forks reduced from 3 to 2.
- Forks moved up to the centerline of the body, and shape changed to be symmetric.
- Armor plate size increased.
