Zane is a torque reaction walker inspired by Droopy. It is able to take steps by accelerating its weapons relative to the chassis. Due to the high moment of inertia of the weapon, this causes the chassis to move, creating a small amount of lift as a result of the angle of the spinners. This works exactly the same upside down in theory.

The first iteration of Zane (V1) was almost entirely 3d-printed out of XyPolyer Nylon. The weapons ran on 3d printed shafts with ball bearings. The shafts were intended to be reinforced by 3 screws. The screws reinforced the shafts decently well in the plane of the weapons, but the small nuts were not enough to hold the weapons down, and the nuts tore out of their housing. This occurred hitting the wall in the test box on Friday, reducing Zane's spares from 2 copies of that part to 1.

This iteration of Zane also used weapon modules that were connected on three sides by screws and difficult-to-access captive nuts, meaning that changing any part was a long operation. The bristles are also a last minute addition made from Velcro-like strips. Zane was also intended to run as an undercutter, but was unable to due to the interaction of the bristles.

This event was the last appearance of:

  • Velcro Bristles
  • Nylon weapon modules
  • Ball bearings
  • Zinc plated Philips screws
  • Captive Hex nuts

Zane V2's biggest improvement was the weapon module. This time around, the weapon was held by a needle bearing stackup riding on a machined titanium shaft. The shaft was screwed to a pocketed aluminum wing. This method has not been damaged whatsoever yet. However, Zane's Gears had multiple failures over the event. The gears were designed without involute curves in mind, meaning that they induced large vibrations and transferred torque poorly. The gears were also not held to the motors very well. There is a set-screw hub and four screws that hold the gear to the shaft. Without retaining compound between the shaft and the hub, the hub is prone to falling off. The gears were also prone to exploding due to insufficient layer adhesion and perimeters, as well as the increased shocks of not being an involute curve. This iteration of Zane also introduced a modular foot system and used TPU bristles for both fights, which also keep the central chassis off the ground and prevent pivoting about the center.

Longer fights revealed that Zane stopped being able to turn after a few turns. This is a result of a lack of ESC braking, which helps with the walking. However the larger issue with the lack of ESC braking is speed saturation. Every time Zane turned, it would only increase the speed of a weapon, meaning that both weapons would eventually make it to maximum speed, leaving Zane without the ability to turn. Zane's ESCs were underspecified for the motor anyway, so the big improvement for May was switching to higher current ESCs with braking.

Last Appearance of:

  • Single Direction Weapons
  • Bristles
  • Bad gears

May 2023

Zane suffered from mysterious electrical issues at this event. This may be a result of running capacitors that were oversized for the ESC, or battery issues. However, Zane also lacked the torque to self right or spin up in a lot of situations, in addition to having insufficient features for inversion due to weight. Zane will therefore have a major redesign to use motors with approximately quadruple the torque of the prior motors. There were also problems with the moisture treatment of the nylon parts, which were much more brittle as a result of not having enough water in them.
