Clyde is a beetleweight flamethrower control bot built by Alex and Gabe Brown. It's unique strategy of surrounding, pinning, and torching opponents makes it one of the most competitive robots at NHRL. It utilizes an impact absorbing TPU 3D printed chassis and long forks to control other robots, and a custom flamethrower system that has become more dangerous with each iteration to deal damage. If you have to fight Clyde, make sure to cover your robot in aluminum tape and don't leave any exposed electronics. |
|||
When builders Alex and Gabriel Brown were coming up with an idea for their first beetle, they wanted to make something innovative and fun. When they decided to build a flamethrower, they had no previous experience working with fuel or fire, and didn't think their bot would be highly competitive. Hence, they named the robot Clyde, after the orange ghost in Pacman who is famous for doing a very poor job of chasing Pacman and not being as smart as the other ghosts. |
|||
The robot first competed under team WPI, where Alex and Gabe got their start doing combat robotics. Thanks to the excellent team environment at WPI Combat Robotics, they got help from experienced mentors and turned their jury-rigged fire hazard into an engineered torch on wheels. The bot took inspiration from the durable construction of Ian MacInerney's Fully Defined, and has since helped inspire other TPU robots from team WPI. |
|||
Each iteration of Clyde has been a leap frog between armor improvements and flamethrower improvements. The first version of Clyde in November 2021 used an arc lighter and an off the shelf lighter refill tank as a jury-rigged flamethrower with minimum damage potential. Clyde first achieved real damage with it's fire in March of 2023, where it melted much of Blackbird to secure a spot in the 2023 World Championship. This version used a frosty-t burner designed based on those used by hobby blacksmiths. This pulled in extra air to mix with the butane in a burning chamber, and allowed Clyde to deal damage to exposed belts and small TPU parts. This increased heat necessitated additional chassis heat resistance. The latest iteration of the flamethrower, which first competed April 2024, mixed even more air in with the butane to create a flamethrower powerful enough to melt most TPU parts and even some UHMW parts. This included the UHMW and TPU armor on Clyde. At the 2024 World Championship, Clyde is planning on utilizing a new front end armor configuration that should be able to withstand their powerful flame. |

Clyde has come a long way since it's first competition in April, when it's flamethrower was just a lighter refill container pushed by a servo. The latest iteration of Clyde's burner utilizes a Frosty-T burner design commonly used in homemade forge burners for blacksmiths. This design uses the venturii effect to pull in air from holes at the back of the robot that mixes with the fuel in the burner to get a more neutral flame. Ignition has been a challenge for Clyde, and the bot has gone through several different ignition strategies. One challenge of ignition with Clyde's burner is that the center of the burner must be as obstructed as little as possible to not disrupt the air flow that helps the burner reach higher temperatures. This has lead to some unreliable ignition, and at the March competition it was only able to ignite once at the start of matches. When the bot failed to ignite at the start of matches, it had no flame throughout the match. Fortunately, the bot has enough fuel for the full 3 minutes, and plans to improve ignition to be more reliable for future competitions. |

If you're a builder interested in building a flamethrower and have any questions about flamethrower design, reach out to Clyde builders Gabe and Alex Brown on the NHRL discord. They're happy to answer any questions you have and love to see more fire at NHRL.
